Sidewalls (2011)

Dir : Gustavo Taretto

🎶 Don't be sad I know you will, Don't give up until, True love will find you in the end. 🎶

I had this film in my film library for a long time, not knowing anything about its story, what it was about, or even what language it was in. But something pushed me to finally watch it today, and I instantly regretted putting it off for so long.

The film explores many issues of modern society, starting with urban overgrowth and expanding into emotional and social struggles. Then it goes deeper down to  reflect on  the search for truth and the longing for a soulmate.

It speaks to you very directly, suggesting that the answer to your problems might be right in front of you, yet you’re unable to recognize it.

Gustavo Taretto, the director and writer, presents fate as a cruel game, a game that toys with you, placing you face to face with your destiny again and again, but never granting it until the exact moment it’s meant to happen. It’s as if fate takes pleasure in watching you suffer, waiting anxiously and uncertainly for what it has for you.

Still, the film carries a simple message: no matter how long the wait, everything will fall into place. The cards will be revealed, the secrets will come to light, and what is meant to happen will happen. And finally, the wait will come to an end.
